Ascending Bird by Silkroad Ensemble

Violinist Colin Jacobsen and clarinetist Siamak Aghaei adapted an ancient folk tune inspired by mythology. The well-known story of a bird trying to soar to the sun is told in "Ascending Bird". The bird reaches a symbolic spiritual transcendence when, after two unsuccessful efforts, it finally makes contact with the sun, losing its physical form in the flames.

The Silkroad Ensemble, featuring Yo-Yo Ma, presented this work at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre. The Silk Road serves as a working laboratory to investigate connections between the arts and academia. In addition to exploring and extending modern musical crossroads, the Ensemble brings in performing artists from around the world to showcase customs from different countries.
